A pneumatic grease pump runs on compressed air — robust, high output ratio, no electricity required. It's the standard choice where air lines are already present, like most workshops and service bays. An electric grease pump uses a motor (110V or 220V) and is ideal where compressed air isn't available — portable field kits, smaller operations, or locations running off a generator. Both Alemite and Lincoln make excellent versions of each type.

An automatic lubricator — also called a single-point auto lube — is a pressurized unit that delivers a set amount of grease or oil to a bearing on a timed schedule, without manual intervention. You need one when: equipment runs continuously, lubrication points are hard or dangerous to access, maintenance teams are missing manual greasing intervals, or bearing failures from under-lubrication are already costing you money. Lincoln Industrial's centralized systems extend this same logic to dozens of lubrication points simultaneously, from one pump.

FRL stands for Filter, Regulator, Lubricator — three functions combined in one inline unit. The filter removes water and particulates from your compressed air. The regulator controls downstream pressure to match what your tools or cylinders actually need. The lubricator injects a fine oil mist to protect internal seals and components from dry wear. If you're running pneumatic tools, cylinders, or grease pumps without a properly set-up FRL, you're shortening their service life significantly. Wire ropes fail from two causes: external corrosion and internal fatigue from strand-on-strand friction as the rope bends over sheaves. Simply painting lubricant on the surface doesn't protect the core. A Permex wire rope lubricator clamps around the rope and forces lubricant under pressure into the interior strands — where the fatigue damage actually happens. For cranes, port equipment, mine hoists, and offshore applications, proper core lubrication dramatically extends rope service life and, more importantly, improves safety by delaying the internal wire breaks that lead to rope failure.

The most common choice for general industrial grease guns is an NLGI Grade 2 lithium or lithium complex multipurpose grease — pumpable at typical shop temperatures and compatible with most bearing types. For electric motor bearings, a polyurea grease is commonly specified. High-temperature applications near furnaces or engines often call for an aluminum complex or calcium sulfonate grease. Always check the OEM specification before switching grease types — mixing incompatible base oils can cause a breakdown of the lubricant film and accelerate bearing wear.
